This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof:

Last week, the webinar focusing on how to create awesome slides. Info on the replay is below. If you are doing ANY presentations ANYWHERE where you will use slides, you want this. If you are doing BLOGS that use images, you want the info within this webinar. if you are planning on ever using a slide, you need to be at the sizzling webinar today on how to create the eye candy that is needed to engage the viewer—whether on a webinar or in person. Do the replay. Do the course. My two bits.

It’s a gulp and oh my … we had so much fun at the Author Tea … we all forgot to take pictures. Those who were here had a ball … and sold books. Those who weren’t … well, what can I say?

Tickled to share that I’ve been invited back to Colorado Blvd’s Barnes and Noble on December 19th and bring other authors, too. Great way to drive book buyers to a terrific bookstore, meet readers and sell books and raise money for your foundation. Love it. Details below for participation.

Today and tomorrow will find me in the studio with audiobook coach Richard Rieman. Yup—finally, I will be voicing How to Create a $1,000,000 Speech. And in November, my team will be "formally" launching the publication of all three versions—print, eBook, and audiobook. Two very, very hot bonuses will be popping on Cyber Monday and throughout the week.
What I love about authors is that we are a caring and sharing community. The tragedy that unrolled last Saturday morning in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania was and is unconscionable —fueled by bigotry; hate that has both shallow and deep roots; and in my opinion, rhetoric that is nonstop at perceived enemies.
When a crowd is shouting, it’s easy to get caught up—human behavior comes into play. But, understand this: silence condones and allows bad things to breed and happen. Character matters. Hate is a very, very bad thing. Please speak up and out.

Join me on MONDAYS at Noon Mountain Time for Facebook Live with Live at Noon with Judith Briles – The Book Shepherd.

For me, it’s a shorty—always less than 30 minutes. Grab an early lunch (or a late one) and get the latest in publishing tips, author strategies, and book marketing goosing ideas. Most times, it will be just me. Sometimes, I will have a guest—someone within my team of publishing pros that I work with and refer my clients to.

Here's how to join in: you will find it on the Judith Briles - Publishing with The Book Shepherd group. Here's the deal ... it's a "closed group" meaning that you have to join it to participate.

I’ll post an announcement on various Facebook pages in the early AM and then again 30 minutes before we start.

See you next Monday ... bring your questions. OR email them to me at Judith@Briles.com before 11 AM Mountain Time and I will answer when I'm live.

And make sure you listen in to Thursday’s podcast—it’s all about taxes and what authors and writers need to do and should be doing.

Go for it …

MEET me when I’m on the road. Watch for my calendar as it starts to build next year. I’m thrilled to say that I’m home until January 12th! then off to the annual Publishing at Sea cruise with 35 awesome authors.

You can pick my brain … minimum time is 30 minutes.
If you need one-on-one-time with me, I’m always open for a few minutes to give you some quick input. But, and it’s a BIG BUT, many call and expect far more than a few minutes. This is called a "consult" and I would be delighted to schedule time with you for "just you and your many questions" that need answers. You can book time with me it at:

Author Friendly Friday this week …

Author Friendly Fridays are fun, sharing and a dynamic closed group. … You can join in the next week. It’s a full hour when you can ask questions—any question. And, I always include a few strategies to get your authoring life ahead of the competition. It’s for paid subscribers ONLY and we do it on Skype.
This is how each call starts: I share a few strategies, tips and tools that attendees can immediately start to use. All share … and ask plenty of questions. They get answers. Definitely an excellent way to start a Friday. Those of you who aren’t participating, you are making a mistake. I love the variety of books and authors who have chosen to participate. What’s also fun, is the energy that can be felt with what everyone is working on. Love it!

Don’t Abandon Press Releases, Despite What Journalists Say

Great tips from the Publicity Hound, Joan Stewart

For at least a decade, we’ve been hearing that the press release is dead.
Findings from a recent survey look like the nail in the coffin:

"New Muck Rack survey: 3% of journalists say they rely heavily on
press releases sent via newswires."

As a publicity expert, I’ve been teaching clients how to write press releases for more than two decades. I was surprised the survey showed results showed that such a high percentage of journalists all but ignore what many newsmakers and PR pros view as a staple in a publicity campaign. The survey also found that 53 percent of U.S.-based journalists don’t rely on press releases at all. You can download all the survey results on "The State of Journalism Today."

If you’re tempted to abandon press releases, don’t. Instead, take a closer look at the survey, conducted by Muck Rack, a platform that filters and analyzes how journalists are covering the news in real time, and Zeno, a communications agency. READ MORE

Savvy authors shouldn’t miss this one:
I speak on stages lots; I do online presentations …, and I use PowerPoint slides … always. My slides are good … NOW, they are going to be GREAT! And I’m now in the process of changing them all. Why? Because of the webinar presented on Wednesday … and I would suggest you join me.

First, here’s the replay that runs a total of 80 minutes including questions:

Next … Get ready for ALL TREATS … and NO TRICKS with Graphics Secrets to Create Eye-Popping PowerPoint Slides in LESS than One-Minute!

· If you are a speaker or speaker-to-be … you need to watch and learn.
· If you are educating your audience and plan on using visuals … you need to watch and learn.
·  If you are doing any type of interaction that uses slides and PowerPoint, you need to watch and learn.

There is a reason why my presenter, Dr. Jaclyn Kostner is paid the big bucks for all her online and remote presentations (I’m talking 4 and 5 figures for her presentations): she knows how to keep her participants and audiences visually engaged from the get-go. Now, so will you.

Questions of the Week:

Question: Should I use different illustrators for my children’s book?

Answer: Most likely, that’s a big NO. You want continuity of your page spreads throughout the book—the same style. And you want the artist illustrator to complete them all within a short time period—a few months. Why? Because styles change, even with the same artist. A style that was embraced a year ago may not be where he or she is at in their drawing/painting journey. It’s essential that your images are the same style from page one to the final page. If you use more than one illustrator, the odds are remote that they will be. And before you go to print—make sure you actually print out every page and lay them out in a visual sequence. Is the little boy on page two the same little boy on page 12 and 30? Too many times, I’ve seen kids "age" over a few pages, then do a regression a few pages later. Continuity and consistency is what you want.

Book Shepherd "Fun" or an "Uh-Oh" of the Week
Love it when I find a fun shorty—a quick smile, a laugh out loud, a sip of tea … and back to work—perfect. A little help always comes from a helping hand … or in this case, happy duck feet.
